Backup mobile phone contacts to Gmail (Google Contacts) for FREE – SyncML

Posted on 30th of December 2009 by Ahmed Khusaam

This is the followup for my previous post, which was synchronization for iphone, which targets a large potion of the rest of the phones in the market. There are two ways you can sync and backup your contacts and i will try and explain both of them to you.

Supporting Devices

  • Nokia Symbian S60 3rd Edition (e.g. E-Series, most N-Series, 6120, 6121)
  • Nokia Symbian S60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 2 or higher (e.g. 6630, 6680, N70, N90, etc.)
  • Most Sony Ericsson phones

It may aswell support many other mobile phone devices. Check your mobile phone manual for SyncML support, if it does give this a try.

SyncML for contacts

Once you have verified that your mobile device supports SyncML, follow the following simple guide to setup and sync your contacts.

NOTE: Names of places in the phone may defer according to the brand of your mobile phone.

  • Open ‘Organizer’ from mobile phone ‘Menu’ and select ‘Synchronization’
  • Click ‘New Account’ and choose ‘SyncML’ as ‘Account type’
  • Give it a name (eg: Google Contact Sync)
  • On the ‘General’ tab, enter the following values:
    • Server address: https://m.google.com/syncml
    • Username: your Google Account username, (eg: you@gmail.com)
    • Password: your Google password
  • On the ‘Applications’ tab mark ‘Contacts’ only
  • On the ‘App. settings’ tab select ‘Contacts’
  • For ‘Database name’ enter ‘contacts’ (lower case), leave other fields blank
  • On the ‘Advanced’ tab, enter the following settings:
    • Sync. interval: choose how frequently you would like to synchronize with Google.
    • Allow Connection: Leave this as ‘Home network’, unless you also wish to synchronize while roaming internationally.
    • Connection: Click on ‘Connect using:’ and select the Internet access point for your carrier. Leave other settings unchanged.
    • Secure Connection: On
    • Leave other settings unchanged
  • Click ‘Back’ and select ‘Yes’ to save your changes
  • Highlight your new account and press ‘Start’

Thats it. Now all your contacts will be in sync backed up to your gmail account as per the settings you have made.
